Has the silver cover ever been taken off the icon or are the representations of the icon without the cover just guesses about what the icon might look like?
Pogo, When the icon was found, in 1823, buried in the island of Tinos, it was of course without the golden cover. The golden cover and all the votive offerings (jewellery, silver things, etc.) were placed later during the years on top of the icon. Inside the church there is also an exact copy of the original icon, made in 1850, which I am uploading above for your information.
